Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a release.
Officers state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then located multiple other marked automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Police say preliminary tests suggest the fluid was probably human blood.
"There is still no lead as to its source; authorities are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the residents for information.
A high-ranking representative said the attack made him stunned and required to be resolved quickly.
"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he wrote on online, recalling the death of nine people by a gunman focusing on residents of immigrant origin in 2020.
